Picking The Right Prop
Posted by Chris on Dec 2nd 2014
One of the questions we are asked the most is, “What outboard prop SHOULD I be using?” In order to answer this question, the more information we have, the better. Below, I will list some of the information that is most helpful to us:
- What prop is on the boat now?
- The size or part number is usually stamped on the hub (either top or bottom), or between the blades on the outside of the prop.
- The size will look like the following: Diameter X Pitch, (ie, 14-3/4X21)
- What is your wide open throttle (WOT) RPM’s? (along with the current prop size)
- WOT RPM’s are the most important piece of information you can provide us with. It tells us what props you can and should use.
- Even if you don’t run your boat at WOT, the number is still important to us.
- What is your engine manufacturer’s WOT RPM range?
- WOT RPM range will be in your engine manual.
- Michigan Wheel provides a rough guide in the following link: Michigan Wheel RPM Chart.
- What is the length of your boat, and is it a heavy boat (fiberglass, workboat, etc)?
