Boat winterization: Grease your splines/ prop removal tools

Posted by Chris on Oct 14th 2014

It's that time of year again, the days are getting shorter and the weather is getting colder. If you are not planning on using your boat during the winter months, you should winterize it. While you are winterizing, one thing you should do is pull the prop off of your outboard or sterndrive motor and put a fresh coat of grease on the splines. The grease should be a sticky, waterproof grease that will not wash off. Mercury recommends using 2-4-C Marine Lube which you can find here. Re-greasing your splines will ensure that the prop does not get "frozen" on the shaft, which then needs to be cut or burned off (it is not a fun process). Even if you are not planning on winterizing your boat, you should still take your prop off and re-grease it once a year.

If you need a prop wrench, we have a wide selection of prop removal tools.

It is also a great time of year to get your props repaired so they are ready when boating season sneaks up on you. See contact info below.
