Which Cone Do You Need for Your Volvo 280/290 DP Shaft?

One of the most frequently asked questions we get when a customer is looking into getting hardware for their Volvo 280DP / 290DP is: Which cone do I need? (Scroll to bottom of page for product links)

Volvo makes two different cones for the 280/290 DP; One is a 16mm, the other is a 20mm. Where we run into some confusion is where to measure.

If the cone has come off and you have lost it, you just need to run some calipers parallel to the shaft as in the image below. As you can see, it is very close to 16mm, so there is your answer.

You can also measure either the bolt head or the forward hole in the cone itself. Due to tolerances, you may not get the below numbers dead-on, but it will be VERY close.

The bolt head for the 16mm cone is going to be 13mm and the forward hole in the cone itself will be 16mm.

The bolt head for the 20mm cone is 19mm and the forward hole in the cone is 20mm.
